Document Summary

3/31 (sorry, i skipped on tuesday but we just went over social reasoning) Internal attribution-saying a bad thing that happened to someone else was because of the person (ex. people become homeless because they"re lazy, etc. ) External attribution-a bad thing happened because of the way things are. Self-serving bias-take credit for own successes; blame own failures on situation. Cognitive dissonance-discomfort as a result of discrepancy between attitude and behavior, we reinforce it by changing the attitude or behavior so they"re consistent: conformity: adjusting one"s behavior to coincide with the group standard (norm) Solomon asch"s study demonstrated that conformity was common, even for simple tasks. Conditions to strengthen conformity: group members are unanimous, group has at least three people (more people means more likely to conform) Tendency to conform is even stronger in a collectivist culture. Conformity can result in groupthink-pressure to conform results in unanimity in a decision- making group don"t appraise all options but simply agrees with outspoken members.
