What informs the choice of data collection?- observation data = gang example. Not possible you cannot just hang out with gang: direct observation, overt vs. covert- overt- you are part of the group and they know you are there. Covert- part of the group but you are masking it almost like working undercover. Covert means people are not aware and will probably not bias behavior. However, covert means your own perceptions could be bias. Overt they could be changing their opinion because of your presence: participant vs. nonparticipant- first forms of data collection. Participant- observing a group and some way affiliated with that group. (ex. How might they impede it?- you may want to approach a member of the group and ask to serve as an informant for you. Less of a worry that they will lead members of group to change behavior. You are not directly involved with data, can"t affect it.
