Separation of identity: south felt they were seriously different than the north, normans cultured, anglo saxons grubby commoners. White southerners would say that northerners were anglo-saxons and the southerners were normans: southerners working really hard to create cultural separation from the north, southern economy extractive. Survives by taking out something like coal. Wealth was overseas: northern economy becoming an industrial economy. Wealth was local economy: north and south grew different products. South grew stuff (cotton) and sold to outside of the south. Redemptioner: without contract, sold in lots of up to 50. Involuntary bound labor: bankrupt or in lieu of jail time or the noose. Hired man/woman: today"s (cid:272)o(cid:373)(cid:373)o(cid:374) defi(cid:374)itio(cid:374) of a ser(cid:448)a(cid:374)t. Labor intensive; produced w/ mix of free & slave labor, black & white. Indentured servants stop coming from europe go to new england, if at all. Muslim expansion & fall of constantinople cut off supply of se european slaves: black slavery becomes the norm.
