What are the steps in the process of perception?
The steps in the process of perception are:
1. Select:
a. You can’t choose to be a part of everything going on around you, so you
have to make a decision and select which one to do. One example of select
is Selective perception. This is when you seem to believe everything you
only see and hear. In order to fully understand something, you have to
witness it for yourself. Another form of selection is Subjective. This is
want we want to be a part of if it sounds important or exciting.
Confirmation bias also plays a role in selection. This is usually involved
through persuasive speeches when hear the speaker’s words on a
persuasive message. We tend to only focus on the messages that we
believe in as well. Selection retention is another type of selection that
refers to remembering only the beliefs we believe as well during another
person’s presentation.
2. Organize:
a. Organization is knowing what is happening to where you can understand
the key concepts given in one’s presentation. There are 2 methods of
organization: figure/ground and grouping. The figure is what is up front
during a presentation and ground is the background (colors, music,
talking) of the event. Grouping happens when these events are either
similar or close together. Similarity refers to resembling each other due to
color, shape, or size (a group of friends wear the same type of fashion).
Finally, Proximity (close together) refers to grouping units. This peoples
that we organize groups according to their physical closeness.
3. Interpret:
a. This is the last step in the perception process. Interpretations are
conclusions that you base off of the information you just received, or is
currently in front of you. Closure is also involved in interpretation.
Closure is when you’re missing a section of the information and you try to
draw conclusions with the data you have already received to figure out
what is missing. Sometimes, interpreting your own data can cause you to
make assumptions about a topic that isn’t backed up with evidence.
Interpretation can also be listed under context.
