Pompeii was in a populated area along the seashore. Volcano is the most important feature of this area. Pumice filled first floor of homes in pompeii. Second largest eruption in history of the world. Trade is a big part of pompeii"s economy. Normal middle class lived in apartments above markets. Many single family homes because it was a wealthy town. Used to collect water from the roof. Peristyle another open space to catch water. This water they would collect would be used to water plants and such. Most impressive things on the houses are frescos. When the wall is almost dry you would paint the plaster to get the small details into the wall. A lot of these seccos have come off. Mimics lavish colored marble imported from abroad. Blocks are molded in plaster and painted. Larger stones painted at the bottom of the wall smaller towards the top. The lowest blocks especially mimie samnite building styles in the area.
