Document Summary

Outline: sex influenced and sex-limited characteristics, cytoplasmic inheritance, maternal effect and genomic imprinting, environmental influences on phenotype. As we understand more about genetics, we begin to understand how little we understand. Mendels rules are awesome but theres so much out there that doesn"t fit those simple rules. The genetic reasons behind some of those things are unknown. Sex influenced and sex linked characteristics: we have aleady discussed sex linked traits (ie color- blindness) What makes a sex linked trait is that they are usually passed from mother to son bc they are x linked traits. Since dad gives son y chromosome, and mom gives x, mom passes them to son: traits that are genetically linked are influenced by gender but are not on x or y chromosome. Typically a billy goat(male) has the beard. Make goats are more likely to have a beard than female goats.
