BIOL 1414 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Activation Energy, Ribozyme, Amylase
Document Summary
Photosynthesis can occur in prokaryotes that do not have chloroplasts. These organisms put the photosynthetic machinery on infoldings of the plasma membrane called photosynthetic lamellae . Endosymbiot theory: a theory that states that the semi-autonomous organelles - mitochondria and the chloroplasts are derived from free living organisms that were captured long ago by larger eukaryotic cells. These would engulf this smaller cell, a photosynthetic prokaryotic cell. When the engulfment is complete, the lamellae could inch off to become the thylakoids, the prokaryote membrane will be the inner membrane, and the endocytotic membrane of the vesicle would be the outer membrane of the new chloroplast. In mitochondria an aerobic microbe (one that converted food to carbon dioxide and water and made atp) was captured. So, the two membranes are there endocytotic membrane and the original bacterial membrane that could perform aerobic metabolism. Metabolism is considered to consist of all the chemical reactions that occur in a cell.
