2 types: separation anxiety disorder severe distress when separated from the attachment figure. Constant worry that something terrible will happen to their parent or loved ones. Scared of meeting new people and new situations. Difficulty changing activities (e. g. going back to school after a weekend) Developmentally inappropriate and excessive fear/anxiety concerning separation, need 3 of the listed symptoms. Persistent, lasting at least 4 weeks in children/adolescents, 6 months in adults. Clinically significant distress or impairment in functioning. Not better explained by other mental disorder: generalized anxiety disorder. Used to be called overanxious disorder of childhood. Diagnosed when the following occur for more than 6 months: the child has many different kinds of apprehension and worries. Child finds it difficult to control their worries the child"s worries are accompanied by physical symptoms of being tired, tense, restless etc. 18 month follow up study showed that 80% no longer had symptoms.
