30-60% of older adults complain of sleep problems. Can be associated with many physical and mental disorders and medications. Sleep hygiene habits may change with age. What you do before you go to bed, where you sleep, when you sleep, who you sleep with. Defined in terms of both nocturnal and day time symptoms. Nocturnal: difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings, shortened sleep, non- Daytime: fatigue, sleepiness, depression and anxiety restorative sleep. Dsm5 requires symptoms be frequent, persistent, distressing and not explained by lack of opportunity or other mental or physical health issues. At least 3 nights a week for 3 months. Restless leg syndrome, chronic pain, cardiac problems etc. Shift work, jet lag, sleep phase issues. Urge to move one"s legs and unpleasant sensations in them. Urge to move and unpleasant sensations being worse during period of inactivity. Urges and unpleasant sensations are worse in the evening and at night.
