PSY E243 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Blood Sugar, Psy, Ego Depletion
Document Summary
Transference: applying (possibly repressed) memories and emotions from old relationships onto new persons. Strategic tool that therapists use to bring repressed memories to the surface. i. e. therapist working with the client could take on the form of an abusive parent if the patient repressed abuse. People maintain mental representations of significant others. i. e. you have stored information about your mother and your relationship with her is built upon that. Representations can be activated by situational cues. Application of the idea of priming. i. e. smelling similar cologne to ex-boyfriend"s activates memories. Active representations impact the interpretation of ambiguous aspects of the environment. Ergo, new others can activate past others and lead to similar relational patterns. Similarity of a new other to a significant other leads you to become the. Memory for the new person (intrusions) i. e. when new person looks like bf"s ex and you automatically hate them. Jack block & gene block: ego control & ego resiliency.
