Three parts of mind interact to influence thoughts and actions. Id: unconscious reservoir of psychic energy; strives to satisfy sexual/aggressive drives and operates on pleasure principle. Anal (18-36 months) going to bathroom is pleasurable; start to see dev. of ego. Phallic (3-6 yrs) genital pleasure (attraction to opp. sex) Ego: conscious; mediates conflict b/w id, reality and superego; satisfies id"s desires appropriately and operates ion reality principle. Superego: partly conscious and unconscious; strives to follow societies rules; punishes ego by creating guilt and shame. Personality develops through series of childhood stages (each stage new challenge to face) Psychosexual dev. is successful healthy person. Unsuccessful fixation (energies remain focused on particular stage w/o progress); until conflict is resolved, person remains stuck".
