CHE E122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: X-Ray Fluorescence, Sebaceous Gland, Gunshot Residue
Document Summary
Guiding metal jacket is used to help the bullet spin and increase accuracy. Distance between gun and object measured by diameter of residue left by gunshot on victim. To get combustion need oxygen, so in a closed system (e. g. a gun) oxygen is needed quickly and as such must be present in the explosive. (e. g. no3 and no2) 3 hno3 - spot test for any nitrates. Old scrap leads used to make shots of shotgun. All shot towers have different supplies of lead e. g. different quality/ different composition each batch/ different impurities i. e. manganese in batteries. Looking for impurities in trace levels to trace bullet back to specific shot towers. Depending on the source of nitrogen there can be different test for nitrates which can distinguish between them. Generally looking for a test that will stand out and make it really easy to see e. g. bright of fluorescent colour. Xrf commonly used in scrap metal yards to determine composition metal.
