PSY 166 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Olfaction, Thiol, Amygdala
Document Summary
Smell is somewhat hard to study b/c there is no reason to the stimulus itself. The stimulus for smell is chemical molecules in the air. The shape of the chemical molecule is not predictive of what they smell like and that is a big difference between other stimuli we look at. Wavelengths around 570 look green, and sound at 3000 hz will sound like a women"s voice. But here, the physical stimulus itself is not predictive of what it smells like. So, we cannot make up a stimulus and know what people should report back. So, it is hard to test because we have no control over what the stimuli smells like that we create. Some person could say it smells like roses and the other could say it smells like oranges. Inside of nose is not smooth, we have ridges called turbinates inside.
