PSY 164 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Freudian Slip, Semantic Memory, Episodic Memory
Document Summary
Things you can describe and talk about. Episodic memory: mental time travel: how did you celebrate your 8th birthday, bringing personal details. It influences what you do, but you can"t necessarily describe it. Priming: subconscious bits of memory can influence what you do without knowing: freudian slip: swapping out a word relating to a thought. Mirror drawing: drawing a design without directly seeing what you"re drawing: develops skill over time, tracks whether you can develop, and how long it takes to improve. Gives you a prompt, but no details. Giving options that might be stored in memory. Implicit retrieval: dragging things out of your brain that you don"t realize are there. Primacy effect: remembering the first few words coming into your brain. Recency effect: remembering the most recent words coming into your brain. Should go away if you have a distractor task: task takes cognitive load (working memory) so there"s not enough to remember.
