PSY 139 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Twin, Genetic Marker, Genetic Linkage
Document Summary
Consists of two components: diathesis: distal necessary or contributory cause that isn"t sufficient to cause disorder, stress: response of individual to taxing demands. Most say in order to be diagnosed with a mental illness, the patient needs a diathesis and a stress: resilience: ability to successfully adapt to very difficult circumstances, protective factors: influences that modify person"s response. All of these are factors into whether or not an individual will develop a mental illness or not. Viewpoints for understanding the causes of abnormal behavior. Biological viewpoint for mental illness: neurotransmitter and hormonal abnormalities in brain (too much or too little) Can affect behavior, the amount of neurotransmitters received in the brain. Some forms of psychopathology have also been linked to hormonal abnormalities: genetic vulnerabilities. Hereditary is important predisposing casual factor for numbers of disorders. Phenotype: observed structural and functional characteristics (what you show)
