There are currently over 370 million indigenous persons living in 90 countries, and the global indigenous population accounts for 15% of the world"s poverty. In fact, one-third of the world"s people living in extreme poverty are indigenous. The majority of indigenous peoples have experienced dispossession of their land, and as a result, they frequently lack access to resources of cultural relevance. Moreover, indigenous peoples suffer from higher crime rates, inferior levels of education, worse health issues, and frequent human rights abuses. They are frequently neglected by governments and receive little state funding and support compared to the majority of the population. Another point that isn"t usually addressed is that indigenous peoples are typically willfully ignored by civil society, meaning that most people simply don"t care about the massive challenges faced by indigenous peoples.
