PSYC 2015 Lecture 9: Lecture
Document Summary
Uses questionnaire and interviews to ask people to provide information about themselves. Focused on groups of people: whether group is large or small, the indicatable case is not the unit of analysis. How are survey different from other designs: observational design, researchers observations create data, experimental design, researches manipulations create data, radiation, manipulation, survey design, research asks participants to provide data. Major considerations: constructing questions, presenting questions, sampling individuals. Survey questions should be straightforward and easy to answer: facts and demographics, year in school; employment status, attitudes and beliefs, the ways that people evaluate and think about issues, e. g. Political ideology on likert type scale: behaviors, past behavior or intended future behaviors. Simplicity: make questions as easy to understand as possible, aim for low reading level, e. g. Survey administration: order of questions, appeal, priming effects, pilot survey before starting data collecting, questionnaire vs. interview format. Written form: administered in person, via mail, online.
