Recent news: the ceo of backpage. com was arrested, busting of u. s. trafficking system of thai women (16 arrested) A large number of trafficking cases in the u. s. in the mid-1990s e. g. forced labor in sweat shops of ca (~70 people), ~100 deaf mexicans in ny to beg and sell things on the streets. It took a lot of effort to prosecute the perpetrators as the u. s. did not have trafficking laws until 2000. The large public, however, did not pay attention to trafficking until the sex trafficking of white eastern european women hit the nerve. Eastern european traffickers are more organized, larger, more powerful, and have more money. They are often a part of a strong network and traffic more than just humans (e. g. arms, drugs). The tip report show that since 2009, the number of prosecutions have steadily increased, but the convictions and the number of victims identified has stayed pretty much the same.
