Effort by christians to drive muslims out bc religion, holy war. Long struggle, created aristocratic warrior class among spanish. For god, their country, and personal glory. Provided wealth for soldiers to the victors go the spoils. Immediately after victory, anyone not christian (muslims, jews, etc. ) exiled from spain, forced to flee. Not a catholic christian?? must be eliminated from society! Want to get rich, get glory, then head back home to enjoy it. Later stay in americas but at first want to go back home. Seen as engaging as pagan rituals, had human sacrifice. At least muslims have same god, believe jesus christ existed. Great debate in spanish church over what to make of the strange new peoples in the americas. Can do anything we want to them.
