Reason why europe was able to start expressing power across globe. Tiny but made for sailing long distances. Once spain started exploiting new world, rest of europe wanted a piece of the pie too. Not really great but like they tried. Not a maritime power at this point. At this point, not establishing colonies or anything in new world. Just wanted to get ahead of spain. Both perilous in their own ways, lots of people die. Not really to find china anymore but to get ahead of spain. Rise to power, economic powerhouse of europe. But then fought w english bc rivalry for control over seas. Countries should be able to extend power over seas.
