Document Summary

Open airway, adequate ventilation and su cient oxygenation are necessary to sustain life. Over extension is as bad or worse than an airway that"s too small. Recognize when to intervene to open and maintain the airway, provide arti cial ventilation, administer supplemental oxygen. Jaw thrust - lift up to lift tongue up - 90 degree angle. Pulmonary ventilation: mechanical process of breathing (expanding/breathing) Air moves in and out of lungs. External respiration: gas exchange between alveoli and pulmonary capillaries. Internal respiration: gas exchange between systemic capillaries and cells. High concentration of gas is in the lungs (21% ox) Delivery of oxygen to the cells and removal of carbon dioxide. Arteries that have oxygenated blood (high concentration in capillaries, low in cells) No oxygen left, moves past membranes into the cell > the carbon dioxide moves into the capillaries. Upper airway extended from nose and mouth to the cricoid cartilage at the inferior edge of the larynx.
