ANTH 1001 Lecture 4: Lecture 4 Notes: Mendelian Inheritance
Document Summary
Major theses of origin of species: all organisms have descended with modi cation from common ancestors, mechanism for evolutionary change is the action of natural selection on individual variation. Pre-dna concepts of heredity > blending theory of inheritance: red + yellow = orange. Blending inheritance : parental contribution is averaged out, or blended, in o spring. Gregor mendel (1822-1884): austrian monk and naturalist, undertook a systematic investigation of inheritance using very large numbers of pea plants: demonstrated particulate inheritance. Monohybrid cross: crossed two pure breeding parents and looked at all the o spring (yellow and green: f1 ( rst llial) generation: all progery had yellow seeds despite variation among parents, f2 generation : green variation reappeared unchanged. Particulate inheritance: each hereditary characteristic is controlled by particulate unit factors, which exist in pairs in individual organisms, one factor is inherited from each parent, these factors remain discrete (unchanged), regardless of external appearance.
