Ovaries (2)- gonads- site for ovum maturation and release. Cortex- follicles in different stages of development. Bubble filled with fluid, an egg with supportive cells. egg= biggest cell in human. Central portion- ct, bv, nerves, and lymphatics. Fallopian tubes- transport ovum to uterus; site for fertilization. Uterus is mobile- except cervix and vagina. Suspensory ligament - attaches ovary to lateral abdominal wall. Mesosalpinx (tube and ovarian ligament) and mesovarian. Round ligament- anchors uterus to labia majora (external) Holds in fixed position (uterus) cardinal ligaments. Cervix and vagina to the lateral pelvic wall. Inner layer- lines uterine cavity-endometrium: basalis, funtionalis. Menstrual cycle- periodic changes in ovaries and uterus of sexually mature. Proliferative- changes in uterus/division/ growth of cells in uterine lining= functional layer. Secretory phase- growth of glands filled with carbohydrates, complex sugars= energy to support fetus. Decrease in hormones= arteries shrink, tissue dies, and sheds. Polymenorrhea: menstrual cycle with interval <21 days. Oligomenorrhea: menstrual cycles prolonged > 35 days.
