Document Summary
9 buss: if the potential for reciprocal altruism has occurred frequently during much of human evolution, then we can predict that our psychology should be shaped to make sure we are good at it. We should have cognitive adaptations for reciprocal altruism or social exchange. Cosmides & tooby (1992) suggested 6 crucial cognitive capacities for exchange: 1. The ability to recognize many different individuals prosopagnosia or face-blindness: 2. The ability to remember previous interactions with those individuals. Are they a cooperator or a cheater: 3. The ability to communicate relevant values to those individuals anger, guilt, gratitude: 4. The ability to model the values of others. understanding what others need so you can provide it: 5. The ability to analyze a current situation and identify a cheater. Number 2: chiappe et al. (2004) predicted that cheaters should be remembered better than non- cheaters. This is because cheaters threaten the viability of social exchange since they accept benefits without paying costs.
