Liberty: negative liberty, keeping governments role limited, positive liberty in order for all to be free, community needs to help ensure basic needs are met. Indirect democracy: a check on the will of the majority. Idea that individuals are responsible for their own well-being: contrasts with social democracy, social democracy: responsible for contributing to the community and providing for each other putting resources together for a better community, associated with negative liberty. The american dream: the belief that you can be successful if you work hard no matter where you come from or who you are. Articles of confederation: confederation group of people who retain most of the power, at first try at coordination, cooperation, weakness of the articles caused its failure. A two-level game: compromises at convention ratification in the states. Imperfect, but durable: reflects interaction of preferences and rules.
