Document Summary

Definition: a set is a collection of at least zero objects that we call elements. We use braces bookends to hold the elements books . Example: a = {1, x,, red} inside are the elements. Notation: if x is an element of set a, then we write x e a if it is not an element, then the e has a slash through it. Two sets are equal if they contain the exact same elements. Definition: a set can have zero elements and is called the empty set . This can be seen by putting empty braces or a 0 with a slash. 0 with a slash is the empty set. U is the universal set: this needs context. Example: if you own a bookstore, your universal set is the books.
