Federal & state courts have separate political jurisdictions and both fall under the u. s. supreme court (dual court system) Civil law referred to as private law because it addresses the definition, regulation, and enforcement or rights in cases in which both the persons who has the right and the person who has the obligation are private individuals (divorce) Tort: claims of personal injury that are not criminal. Defendant- person who is trying to defend themselves. Federal courts- set up very similar to state courts, all the way up to supreme courts. Trial courts of original jurisdiction: decide whether the defendant is guilty and the punishment. Special courts: hear the civil and criminal cases the majority of the cases are civil. Court of appeals both parties have the right to appeal if you"re found guilty, you can appeal it if you"re found not guilty prosecutor can appeal it. Affirm the case: saying they didn"t find any judicial errors.
