1861 first battle of civil war at fort sumter. Population- 5. 5 million (white) & 4. 5 million (slaves) (90%+ of iron, coal) Confederacy believes britain and maybe france will step in and fight for them because they need their cotton. Confederacy hasn"t proven they will win so britain doesn"t want to step in. Britain is antislavery so doesn"t receive help from britain. Led bullet with a hollow base and groves on it helped it to spin and go farther. Sherman"s neckties 1864- destroying the railroads in the south so that they cannot be used. Union, led by grant sherman, tactic of attacking confederacy resources in order to crush morale of soldiers (make them want to give up) Confederacy says they are fighting for liberty is direct threat to slavery which is their property. They say they"re fighting for the same reasons as their ancestors. Freed slaves in areas of rebellion : confederacy won"t win because slaves were ones making uniforms etc.
