Document Summary
Anth lecture 6: the anthropology of consumption. Relationships between people constructed and mediated through things. Two issues: cost and benefit distributed unequally; really hard to pin down what is sustainable. All species modify their environment in some way (ants, worms: production is not connected to consumption in terms of capitalism. Mandated consumption: urban design example: you have to have vehicles in residential communities (subdivisions are strategically placed 15+ mins away from everything: gifts perpetuate alliance and relationship. Gifts form a positive relationship and show what kind of relationship you have. Generalized reciprocity (nobody is keeping score): family parents took care of you now you take care of them. Balanced reciprocity: what is supposed to be returned (birthday gifts) Negative reciprocity: absence of reciprocity (get as much as i can without giving anything: redistribution: collection of resources at a specific person or place and then giving it back to.
