PSYC 362 Lecture 9: Chapter 9- Romantic Relationships
Document Summary
Vast majority of adults want to get married. Less women than men want to marry. About 5% of 7th, 9th, and 11th graders don"t want to marry. Men and women look for different things in relationships. Women: high education, financial stability, and good work ethic. Women have higher relationship standards than men. Less value placed on mate"s financial resources or potential attractiveness in lesbian relationships. Gay men continue to place high value on mate"s attractiveness. Having a similar mate is still important, but less so. May be because dating pool is smaller, which makes matching less likely. Women and men behave in ways that will maximize the survival of their genes. Males value attractiveness and youth because these are indicators of fertility. Women value status and financial resources because these are indicators or an ability to provide for offspring. Women invest more in their offspring because they have fewer opportunities to reproduce.
