Document Summary

Objectives: practice by example imparting the theory behind rudimentary ray tracing. Ray tracing: take a ray of light and point it at an object, nobody does ray tracing by hand because of reflection calculations. Process for deciding shadow: decide if infinite light source or point light source, point light source = something that is a finite distance away, like a light, infinite light source = extends over infinite distance bulb, draw rays. Extend ray lines through figure until hits ground line: extend angles of intersection with rays and edges of solid object. Point light source: set up two-point perspective image, set up shadow and light vanishing point, look at vertical edges of cube rather than those that go towards the vanishing point. Invert direction of the light rays coming from point light source. Cone: tip will be used to generate part of the shadow, outside curved edge will be used for sides of triangular shadow.
