Document Summary

Racism was alive in the north and south. If an african goes to another state, the state had the obligation to return them. Have the people vote on what they wanted. It was hard for middle class people to work if there were these plantations everywhere worked by these african americans. Wanted to restrict black people from coming into the state. Banned slavery in territories acquired from mexico. 1844 got 16,000 votes in ny that upset the whigs and clay lost so polk won. Argued they had a right to their property(slaves) Wanted everything in the western hemisphere to be a slave state. 21% voted for all of these to happen. Had different coalitions to vote for different parts. Paid a judge more if they sided with the owner rather than the slave. If you run away to that state you are free. Had poster in boston advising black people to stay away from slave catchers or police men.
