Tips and tricks for calculations in microsoft excel. Microsoft excel can automate most (if not all) of the calculations you"ll need to perform to work up experimental data. To tell excel to perform a calculation in a cell, start the input in that cell with = . Excel will process everything after the equals sign as a formula. Within formulas, the operators +, -, *, and / can be used for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division respectively. A negative sign can be placed before numbers, cell references, or functions to negate the value. Unless told to do otherwise, excel will print as many digits as it can in the results of calculations. Like a calculator, it will often spit out more digits than are signi cant in calculated values. To limit the number of digits displayed, highlight the cell of interest and click format > cells or type control-1 (or 1 on a mac).
