BIOL 1511 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Meristem, Fibrous Root System, Axillary Bud
Document Summary
Different types f tissues work together to form an organ and organs work together to form organ systems. Shoot system- grows above ground, absorbs light needed for photosynthesis: vegetative (non- reproductive) parts like the leaves and stems, reproductive parts- like the flowers and fruits, root system- supports plants and absorbs water and minerals; usually underground. Sa which help reduce water loss: hot climate- reduced to spiny leaves and succulent stems (conserve water, aquatic- wide lamina that can float on surface of water, have thick waxy cuticle to repel water. Plant tissues: plants are multicellular eukaryotes with tissue systems made of various cell types with different functions. Permanent (non- meristematic) tissue- plant cells that no longer actively divide: tissues in roots. Epidermis- outer layer surrounds areas of ground tissue and vascular tissue; provides protection and helps in absorption: root hair (extensions of root epidermal cells) increase sa and aid absorb water and minerals.
