THEA 234 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Petticoat Breeches, Illuminated Manuscript, Waistcoat
Document Summary
Restoration 1660 - 1715 (1660 - 1680) (1680 - 1715) Note: review readings for final except illuminated manuscript one, other two must reread both posted on canvas. When what we"ve been calling the doublet first appeared it started as an undergarment for warmth and tying hose with a few different names. It"s not a really distinctive garment until we hit the tudor period seen under the jerkin (which has the base). In the cavalier period the waist of the doublet rises with ribbons in that area for decoration. The peplum gets longer and the sleeves get really full and are highly decorated with lace and ribbons. The shirt becomes important again and can be seen beneath the doublet. In restoration in the 1680s the doublet is lost and the time before that a bit transitory period. There are two distinct styles within the restoration period.
