In a given year, 7. 8% of us teens and adults meet criteria for substance use disorder. Native americans highest rate; asian americans lowest rate. Estimated that only 18% of those with sud receive treatment. High rates of comorbidity w/ other mental health diagnoses. Temperamental factors like impulsivity, sensation seeking, and novelty seeking may mediate relationship between abuse and personality disorders. Important to inquire about addiction during clinical intake. Often not volunteered spontaneously & denied initially. Substance use complicates diagnosis and can reduce effectiveness of treatment. Diagnosis applies to all classes of drugs except caffeine. Compulsive caffeine use is so common it"s not considered an addiction. Interferes in some way with client"s life. Rather than enjoying the drug, it"s now needed .
