Reactionary: reaction to views of development that equate development with the west. The rest of the world needs to be like the west. Discourse: began with colonialism and presently strengthened by powerful global actors (i. e. , the un, the imf, the us, etc. ) Much of the world has bought into the west"s discourse, and they"re now trying (unsuccessfully) to be like the west. Development as potentially harmful: destroys social structures and culture, causes dislocation and hardship. Multifaceted view: suggests that development involves improving the well-being of peoples. Economy as well as health, education, democracy, law and order, freedom from discrimination, gender equality, etc. Involves expanding the capacities of individuals to pursue their well-beings. Believes all types of freedom are complementary. Political freedom aids economic freedom, freedom from gender discrimination aids freedom to access public goods. Diverse theories: along with the different ideas of what development is, there are many different views of what promotes or impedes development.
