PSYCH 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Ingroups And Outgroups, Deindividuation, Social Loafing
Document Summary
Social loafing- many hand do not make light the work . People in a group don"t put in as much effort versus if they were by themselves. A farmer tested his farmhands pull on a rope both by themselves, in a group of 3, and in a group of 6. He found doing it by themselves, they put in more effort. Shouting-people yelling in groups will yell quieter in group then by themselves(they can do this without other people really being there and it still holds) Diffusion of responsibility-when you are doing a task by yourself you are. 100% responsible for the output, but in a group you can share the responsibility. Deindividuation-when you feel like other people can"t identify you individually, you act in ways you would not normally. In a study where you are in a dark room with strangers, you are more willing to talk about intimate details of their lives.
