General Psych
● Short term vs. Long Term
○ Work in conjunction but things we do to encode, store, and retrieve in
each have a different key
○ Short term – all about rehearsal
● Long term – all about process called elaboration
○ Types of memories
■ Semantic: facts, knowledge
■ Episodic: events we have experienced
■ Procedural: how to do things
○ Elaboration Issues
■ Schemas and encoding : organized knowledge structure in
long term memory, mental representation for a concept,
activity, person, group in long-term memory – use of these
organized knowledge structures both get things in, store things,
and retrieve them in long term memory is all about this
organization concept called a schema
■ What elaboration is in terms of long term memory: trying to
activate the information relevant to a schema
● Categorize it for schema that already exists – store it better
● Or if there’s not already a concept to an existing schema to
encode it into long term memory, take other bits of
information about the concept so that we elaborate on it,
more likely to create a schema in our long term memory that
will help us store
● Cognitive thought that you put into storage – fitting it in or
creating a new schema
■ How elaboration works: ability to use existing schema in taking in new
information and important aspect in terms of retrieval
■ Concept revolves around ability to take new information, fit it in, or
create a new schema relative to other information
○ Example: Why does Drigotas use examples!?
■ Use of examples gives you something to elaborate on
■ Tend to be better for storing information to the degree to which we
can self-reference
■ if you can think of an example of your life regarding diff types of
diff long term memory concepts, you’ll be able to encode it, store it,
and retrieve it
■ richer elaboration of getting things in and out of long term memory
■ Categorization: tend to want to fit new information into old
information, stuff things into categories we already have stored
■ State dependent learning – concept that in terms of what state
you’re in psychologically, where you are and what you’re doing
when you’re elaborating and trying to encode things into long-term
memory tends to affect your ability to retrieve the information such
Document Summary
Work in conjunction but things we do to encode, store, and retrieve in each have a different key. Long term all about process called elaboration. What elaboration is in terms of long term memory: trying to activate the information relevant to a schema. Categorize it for schema that already exists store it better. Cognitive thought that you put into storage fitting it in or creating a new schema. How elaboration works: ability to use existing schema in taking in new information and important aspect in terms of retrieval. Concept revolves around ability to take new information, fit it in, or create a new schema relative to other information. Use of examples gives you something to elaborate on. Categorization: tend to want to fit new information into old information, stuff things into categories we already have stored. Ppl tend to remember things better if they"re in same state.
