PSYCH 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Motor Coordination, General Idea, Ego Depletion
Document Summary
We want to be able to predict something: human behavior, emotions, animal behavior, mental illness, thought, etc. Do this by researching what variables might predict outcome behavior/emotions/thought. Good research in psychology is theory based. First step in good research formulate a theory. You should have some sort of grounding in a theoretical position about why something occurs. Plan an experiment: collect the data give people alcohol and measure motor coordination and balance, analyze the data statistical techniques to assess whether results are genuine, disseminate results- report findings in research journal. Phenomenon: good research is theoretically driven (you have a theory going into it you want to test why there is a difference in behavior, theoretical research allows you to under the cause or why. Gives you understanding the cause of why something occurs: vs phenomenological research simply demonstrates that an effect occurs. Not necessarily understanding why it occurs or the cause of the phenomenon.
