NUTR 125 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Lipoprotein Lipase, High-Level Data Link Control, Very Low-Density Lipoprotein
Document Summary
Transport of cholesterol from tissues to liver: hdl is made by liver and intestine, hdl picks up cholesterol from dying and other cells and transfers it out other lipoproteins, hdl delivers the cholesterol to the liver. Cv disease and lipids: hdl- good cholesterol , ldl- bad cholesterol , but isn"t cholesterol the same, the actual molecule is the same. Atherosclerosis: clinical condition, artery wall thickens as a result of plaques, plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood. Optimal or desirable levels (know these numbers: low ldl-c < 100 mg/dl, high hdl-c > 60 mg/dl, low total cholesterol < 200 mg/dl, low triglycerides < 150 mg/dl. Why all these recommendations: idea is to reduce the levels of atherogenic particles, but why, limit the buildup of plaque. Current method to assess cvd risk (aha): ascvd risk estimator: gender, age, race, total cholesterol levels, hdl-cholesterol levels, systolic blood pressure.
