Most common strategy for lumber and pulp wood. Large machines are used to rapidly fell, trim and skid logs. Every tree in the harvested area is cut, regardless of size. Leaves forests in a variety of patches. Small number of mature (large) trees harvested in a 10- 20 year rotation. Leaves forest in a close to natural" state. Less controversial method, but less profitable (in the short run) Parks and protected areas: clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values. Clear- cutting: logging practice that removes all trees from an area. Old- growth forests: complex, primary forests (trees at least 150 years old) Macronutrients: nutrients required in relatively large amounts. Micronutrients: nutrients required in relatively small amounts. Need water for photosynthesis, solvent, transporting chemicals, supporting cells (turgidity) Transpiration: water passes from roots to trunks and branches and evaporate.
