Protocol is a set of rules to ensure interoperability. Protocol data unit (pdu) organizes the packets. Dns is like calling someone from your contacts. You know their name, but not their number. Dns resolves the domain name to get the ip before sending the ip. 8. 8. 8. 8 and 8. 8. 4. 4 are popular dns servers from google. Designed for lans as a way to recognize a computer. Filter and forward traffic based on ips. Routing table tells the router where to send stuff. Every routing table has a default gateway that sends all data unless otherwise specified. Routers take in two ip addresses: private (ie. home) and isp"s. Console port: a serial port that connects a computer and a router via a rj45/db9 cable for configuration. Some routers use web connections, some use console ports. Quality of service = toolset that allows you to meter how much bandwidth devices get based on ip address, mac addresses.
