Document Summary

Effects of changing ventilation on arterial po2, pco2 & ph: holding breath without changing metabolic activity. Decrease in po2 + increase in pco2 = increase in ph: hyperventilating without changing metabolic activity. Oxygen transport: dissolved in plasma (1. 5%, bound to hemoglobin (98. 5%) O2 easily forms a reversible combination with hb to generate oxyhemoglobin. Heme contains iron which is what oxygen binds to. Pick up (bind) lots of oxygen at the lungs. Be able to drop off (dissociate) that oxygen at the cells of the body"s tissue for use. Pick up waste products from cells (co2) Bring the co2 back to the lungs for removal. Co from car exhaust + tobacco smoke. Co can bind to hemoglobin heme group better than o2 but they body cannot use it suffocation. Treat by administering high o2 concentrated air. Po2 is not the only factor that affects the binding of o2 to hb it also depends on.
