BIOL 121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Acclimatization, Autocrine Signalling, Paracrine Signalling
Document Summary
You can have an organ that acts as an integrating center or an effector (normally a muscle) Reflexes are often protective instinct so we want them to happen quickly. Sometimes we have different receptors from the same stimulus or vise versa. In the hypothalamus there is a set point where we compare the info coming to the brain to. Like temperature, think of goldilocks (too hot, too cold, just right) If too hot, there"s fever so there are different responses to different stimuluses. These reflex are typically from the nervous system or the endocrine system. Hormone is secreted by the gland through the blood to another organ. Nervous system- info is transmitted 2 ways, there is an electrical signal called membrane potential. Neurons are single cells that are very elongated. Neurotransmitter- chemical transmitter so you can talk between neurons or neuron to effector. Local reflex- happens within same cells or nearby cells.
