ANTHR 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Surrogacy, Sperm Donation, Cultural Anthropology
Document Summary
Anthropology stabilizes the nature, but it cannot tell us anything that cannot be found in nature in a biological sense. We cannot talk about something that is not cultural and human. We are living in a time of human change and a different kind of nature (hurricanes, snow storms etc. We will look at this in terms of genders. Kin gets remade through new reproductive technologies. Two kinship (how people are related to each other) systems: natural (biological idea) and cultural (ways n which kinship systems work in many societies) Relation by blood and by marriage are very different varying ideas about what is appropriate. Parallel vs. cross cousins (in many societies people encouraged to marry your cross cousin but not you parallel cousin)- ex. Your mother has a sister (same gender), a child of your aunt would be your parallel cousin but if your mother has a brother, that brother"s child would be your cross cousin.
