Document Summary

Anthro used to be a discipline that was studied in an armchair (or traveling) Malinowski was one of the first people to travel and do field work (it"s a method, the way you go and learn about anthropology). It"s the ethnographer that has to go from facts on the ground to the book that will tell people about it (how this is done is complicated and explained in malinowski"s piece) Companionship, taking part in daily life (micro practices)- this is what field work is about (participant observation: being there and experiencing things instead of taking notes) Constant tacking back and forth between the field and analysis (always in the field observing and writing it down, going over what you have written etc. ) The ultimate goal is to capture the essence of a different culture (there is not an expert sitting around to tell you the essence of the different culture, you have to experience it yourself)
