More specifically, it is young people who experience multiple and compounding disadvantages and inequalities who are most likely to become drawn into the criminal justice system. Come from lower se groups/ experience poverty. Have poor relationships and low levels of supervision from parents/caregivers. Have severe brain impairment e. g memory, attention. Experience homelessness - and this is linked with other factors, such as having experienced abuse within the family and being indigenous. Be involved in the child protection system. Men are disproportionately involved in the justice system as perpetrators of crime e. g violence (and also as the victims of some types of crime e. g violence in public spaces).
