Cahokia (saint louis) early cities -> illinois. Size of a 20,000 population in 1158. Agriculture was effective and created surplus -> stop working. Divided between elite and lower class (farmers, construction workers) Massive contruction works -> took over 200 years. Mount had been abandoned over 100 years. Many mounts had been eroded and destroyed as people did not understand the values/relevant of these cities. Center of missippippian -> decline -> 1500 area became a ghost town -> no clear reasons why it was abandoned. May have been a temporary settling place. Around 500 ad, anazazi were farmers, hunters and gatherers => found dams and irrigation system. Cliff palace abandoned about 1250 => ghost town => no clear clarification. People scattered, most people migrated toward south toward arizona. 1906 protected site as a national park (5,000 known archaeological site) Diseases -> wipe out huge part of the population. Drunk -> trading in alcohols was beneficial.
