Document Summary

According to hooks and west, the crisis between black males and females arises in context to competition and recognition. When people are suffering a legacy of deprivation, there is a sense that there are never enough goods to go around and so we must viciously compete with one another. Blacks have suffered not only in regard to their identity but also have been deprived of basic benefits. It is due to this that there is a competition between blacks themselves which ultimately translates into a competition between black males and black females. For example, competition between black women and men surfaced around the issue of whether black female writers are receiving more attention than black male writers. Although this may not be true, it is this belief that black women who succeed are depriving black men of their success that creates a competitive perspective.
